Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment that uses pressurized oxygen to aid in healing wounds. While relaxing in a comfortable chamber which is pressurized at greater–than-normal atmospheric pressure, patients breathe pure oxygen, saturating their blood plasma and allowing it to carry from 15 to 20 times the normal amount of healing oxygen to the body’s tissues. By increasing the amount of oxygen in your blood that is circulated to body tissues, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can promote wound healing, preserve damaged tissue, help to control infection and increase the formation of blood vessels.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may be considered for many conditions, including:
- Diabetic ulcer of the lower extremities
- Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
- Soft tissue radionecrosis & osteoradionecrosis
- Compromised skin grafts & flaps
- Progressive necrotizing infection/fasciitis
- Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency
What Can I Expect During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is pain-free, safe and effective, with few to no side effects. During treatment, patients lie in a see-through atmosphere-controlled chamber that allows freedom of movement. During the hyperbaric oxygen treatment the patients are monitored at all times by a trained technician. Most patients listen to music, watch TV or nap during their treatment. Individual treatments last 90 to 120 minutes. The number of treatments prescribed varies by condition; usually 20 to 60 treatments administered five days per week. All HBOT sessions are supervised by specialty trained Physicians, Nurse Practitioners & Nursing staff.
