National Wear Red Day is the kick-off for a number of heart-health related initiatives for Saint Clare’s Health System that will occur in the month of February.  The community is also invited to “Saint Clare’s CARES: A Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Event” on Saturday, February 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The event, located at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall, will feature discussions on cancer and cardiovascular disease prevention with Saint Clare’s physicians, as well as interactive demonstrations and expert tips on heart-healthy meal preparation and much more.  The event is free, and registration is requested by calling 1-866-STCLARE (866-782-5273).

For 10 years, women have been fighting heart disease – the No. 1 killer of women – both individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. To date, more than 627,000 women’s lives have been saved, but the fight is far from over.  Women need the right information, education and care, in order to treat, prevent, and even end heart disease.

Saint Clare’s cardiovascular program provides board certified cardiologists, vascular surgeons, a state of the art catheterization lab, a 24/7 Primary Stroke center that is staffed by a trained, multidisciplinary stroke team, and a interventional radiology lab used to diagnose and treat complex vascular disease. Saint Clare’s is designated to provide life-saving angioplasties for the community in an emergency.  Saint Clare’s offers a continuum of care for Cardiac patients, including offering Cardiac Rehab and support group services.  Saint Clare’s also offers a four-week program called Transitions in Care, designed to prevent re-hospitalization and improve the continuity of care for persons with chronic conditions, including heart failure and Acute Myocardial Infarction, across different health care settings and ensure the smooth transition of each change, with no cost to the patient or their insurance provider for any of the resources for the duration of the program.

To mark ten years of the fight against heart disease in women, the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women is asking Americans to raise awareness about heart disease and Go Red in new and bold ways – turning every landmark, every Main Street, every organization, social media page and home RED to shine a spotlight on the No. 1 killer of women.
