Saint Clare’s Health System Announces Milestone in Robotic Surgery

500th Robotic Surgical Case Performed at the Center for Robotic Surgery
Saint Clare’s Health System announced today that it has reached a significant milestone in robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgery, performing its 500th case at the Center for Robotic Surgery.
As part of its ongoing commitment to provide the latest in medical care and technology to its patients in the communities in which they live, Saint Clare's offers robotics for minimally invasive surgery with the da Vinci ® S Surgical System, first deployed at Saint Clare’s in March of 2007.
Through the use of the state-of-the-art robotic technology of the da Vinci ® S Surgical System, Saint Clare’s offers an effective, minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures, allowing patients to turn to Saint Clare’s for surgical procedures that help to improve patient outcomes and redefine today’s standard of care.
The da Vinci® S Surgical System provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, putting a surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. The da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.
“The use of robotic technology continues to grow at a rapid pace, with some of the major benefits to patients including a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss, fewer transfusions, less scarring, faster recovery and a quicker return to daily activities,” said Gregg Zimmerman, M.D., Medical Director, Center for Robotic Surgery at Saint Clare’s.
“With our accomplished surgeons at the Center for Robotic Surgery having now performed 500 robotic surgeries, this is a true testament to the level of care and advanced treatments offered to patients right here in our own community,” Dr. Zimmerman continued.
The Center for Robotic Surgery at Saint Clare’s is a multi-specialty program that is equipped and staffed to offer patients a wide variety of services. Saint Clare’s physicians perform a range of procedures including urologic, gynecologic, urogynecologic, gynecologic oncology, and general surgery, as well as a host of highly specialized procedures such as radical cystectomy, sacrocolpopexy, partial nephrectomy, myomectomy, and radical hysterectomy.
“At Saint Clare’s, patient care is our priority,” said Sharon Sefcik, clinical director of Surgical Services at Saint Clare’s. “Robotic surgery offers an advanced treatment option for a variety of conditions, with a shorter recovery for our patients.”

About the da Vinci ® S Surgical System
The da Vinci ® S Surgical System is a minimally invasive surgical robot that integrates the classic skills of the surgeon with the precision of a robot. The system consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon's console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a high-performance vision system and surgical instruments that provide range of motion and dexterity that exceeds that of a human. Powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology, the surgeon's movements are seamlessly translated into precise robotic movements of the surgical instruments.
With the da Vinci system, the surgeon is seated at the console a few feet away from the patient, where they view an actual image of the surgery site and operate in real-time, through tiny incisions, with the robotically-enhanced surgical instruments. At no time does the surgeon see a "manufactured" image of the surgery and the system cannot be programmed, make decisions on its own, move in any way, or perform any type of surgical maneuver without the surgeon's input.
