Saint Clare’s Health System Hosts Annual Nursing Camp for Children in the Community
Sixth Annual Nursing Camp Encourages Local Teen to Pursue Career in Healthcare
August 11, 2011
Saint Clare’s Health System’s hosted its Sixth Annual Nursing Camp in July at the Saint Clare’s Hospital/Dover General campus to support children in the community interested in a future in healthcare. The four day program is offered to local teenagers, ages 13 to 16 years of age, and provides an opportunity to meet and experience the dedication and passion of hospital staff and to visit various departments within the hospital.
The camp, which is sponsored by Saint Clare’s Community Outreach and Congregational Ministry Program, included tours of different areas of the hospital including the Emergency Department, Physical Therapy, Radiology, Sleep Center, Operating Room, Cancer Care, Complementary Medicine, and Regional Diabetes Center, educational activities on issues such as hand-washing techniques and the importance of patient confidentiality, and certification classes on Basic First Aid and CPR.
One of this year’s seventeen participants, Charlotte Gayle, a 14-year-old student from Montague, NJ, first became interested in the medical profession after seeing how much her mother and aunt, both nurses, enjoy hospital work and being able to make a difference in their patients’ lives. After completing Nursing Camp, Charlotte says that she is now eager to pursue a career in healthcare, possibly in an emergency room, and that she would highly recommend the program to other young people in the community. “The medical staff at Saint Clare’s is wonderful. They were fun and made Nursing Camp very interesting. I cannot wait to go back to school to tell my friends how lucky I was to be able to attend,” Charlotte said.
