The EEG, or electroencephalogram, is a recording device that measures the electrical activity in different areas of the brain. What makes this test different than a standard EEG is that your child’s physical activity will be recorded on video at the same time.
The test is performed in a specialized, private room at Saint Clare’s Hospital/Denville. The test will take 24 to 48 hours or more, with the duration determined by the child’s doctor. It will take about an hour for the technologist to connect wires to your child’s scalp with special glue. Though this is not painful, it may be difficult for your child to hold still for such a long time. If you have any concerns about this issue, talk to your doctor or call the Neurology Department at 973-625-6645.
We recommend that a parent stay with the child during the entire test. The technologist will ask the parent to press a button when their child is having an event and to keep a record of events that occur during the test.
Your doctor will order an EEG and give you a prescription and or referral. Contact Call One, Saint Clare's central scheduling service, at 1-888-808-1234, to schedule the date and time for the test. Be prepared to tell us the type of test you are scheduling and please have your insurance information ready when you call.
