The EEG, or electroencephalogram, is a recording device that measures the electrical activity in different areas of the brain. It is a valuable tool in investigating and managing epilepsy and is also useful in identifying other neurological disorders. The test is performed as an outpatient procedure through The Children's Neurology and Epilepsy Center at Saint Clare's Hospital/Denville. The test is noninvasive and causes no pain or discomfort. We specialize in sleep-deprived EEGs and perform each test without sedation.
Approximately 26 electrodes will be placed on your child's scalp. It is important for your child to sit/lay still while this is being done, and to remain calm and quiet throughout the test. The technologist will assist in making your child comfortable and calm. You can help by altering your child's sleep pattern the night before the test, thus encouraging your child to sleep through the procedure. Parents are permitted to stay with their child throughout the test unless the child becomes distracted or overwhelmed. In this case, only one parent will be permitted to stay.
Your doctor will order an EEG and give you a prescription and or referral. Contact Call One, Saint Clare's central scheduling service, at 1-888-808-1234, to schedule the date and time for the test. Be prepared to tell us the type of test you are scheduling and please have your insurance information ready when you call.
Please call the Neurology Department at 973-625-6645 to further discuss any concerns you might have about this test or how to prepare for it.
