Cancer Care at Saint Clare's offers the latest in radiation and medical oncology, a PET/CT scanner for the diagnosis and staging of cancer, digital mammography, and an inpatient oncology unit and an ambulatory treatment unit. Experienced clinical staff, with specialized training in cancer care, are led by leading oncology physicians who treat a broad array of cancers.
Radiation Oncology
Radiation oncology is devoted to the management of patients with cancer through the use of ionizing radiation alone, or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy. Radiation oncology is a highly-integrated, multidisciplinary medical specialty involving close interactions between physicians, nurses, nutritionists, social workers and highly specialized members of the patient care team.
At Saint Clare's, radiation oncologists provide individualized and compassionate care with special concern for the entire patient. Donald F. Cann, M.D. and Durgesh Hajela, M.D. , Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center-trained specialists,
have dedicated themselves to providing this recognized level of care to Saint Clare's patients.
Medical Oncology/Hematology
Medical oncology, also referred to as chemotherapy, treats cancer with one or more anticancer drugs that can destroy cancer cells. Most forms of chemotherapy target all rapidly dividing cells and are not specific for cancer cells. Thus, chemotherapy has the potential to harm healthy tissue, especially those tissues that have a high replacement rate (e.g. intestinal lining). These cells usually repair themselves after chemotherapy. Because some drugs work better together than alone, two or more drugs are often given at the same time.
Hematology focuses on the blood, the blood-forming organs, and the study, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of blood diseases. Most blood diseases, including blood cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia, affect the proper production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, the mechanism of coagulation, etc.
Saint Clare's offers medical and hematology oncology services through accomplished medical oncologists, including:

Advanced Diagnostic Imaging
Cancer Care at Saint Clare's offers the "gold standard" in imaging for the diagnosis and staging of cancer. Located at Saint Clare's Hospital/Dover, the PET/CT merges the capabilities of two advanced imaging technologies - the PET (Positron Emission Tomography), which shows metabolism and the function of cells, and the CT (Computed Tomography), which shows detailed anatomy - into one. This advanced technology allows physicians to more accurately diagnose and stage cancer, as well as monitor the progress of treatment and therapy. PET/CT can be integral in the determination of which combination of surgery, radiation or chemotherapy is most likely to be successful in managing the disease.
At the Women's Health Center, located at Saint Clare's Hospital/Dover, Saint Clare's utilizes the most advanced breast imaging technologies available - the digital mammography. The digital mammography offers women a high level of convenience by producing near-instant, easy-to-read computerized breast images. Unlike conventional mammography, women don't have to wait for X-ray film to be developed to be sure that the images are usable. This digital imaging also reduces the need for the callbacks sometimes necessary with X-ray film. Conventional film mammography is also available.
