Few things worry parents more than when a child is sick or hurt. The Evelyn M. Spiro Pediatric Emergency Care Center (PECC), located at Saint Clare's Hospital/Denville, offers the expertise, training and special equipment to take care of a child and their parents in an emergency.

The PECC is geared to children from the moment they walk through the doors. Children are seen by emergency physicians, with specialized experience in dealing with pediatric illness and injury, in an area that is separate from the regular emergency department. The heart of the Center is a five-bed treatment area with the latest in medical technology to diagnose and treat children quickly. Even the waiting room has special furniture, toys books, and entertainment for children.

The PECC is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and noon to midnight on weekends. When the PECC is not open, the regular Emergency Departments at Denville, Dover  and Sussex are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the event of serious injury, severe bleeding, difficulty breathing or if you are in doubt, call 911.

Serious illness or injury to children often strikes quickly, so it's a good idea to have the following info ready for ambulance and hospital personnel:

  • Child's first and last name
  • Parent's names
  • Home address
  • Home phone number
  • Parent's work phone numbers
  • Pediatrician's name and office number
  • Conditions/medications
  • Child's allergies (if applicable)

While most of the children seen in the PECC will go home after treatment, it's good to know that our special attention to children continues at Saint Clare's for those children that must remain in the hospital. Our kid-friendly, inpatient pediatric unit is staffed by knowledgeable pediatric nurses, in-house pediatricians and a pediatric hospitalist. A special same-day surgery unit, geared towards children, is available in both Denville and Dover.
